Westminster City Council completes 20mph rollout

Riders travelling through Westminster will now have to adhere to a borough-wide 20mph speed limit.

Plans for the 20mph limit were approved earlier this year, in a bid to ensure the safety of the increasing number of people opting to walk and cycle during the Covid-19 pandemic.

After a four-month installation process, all streets managed by Westminster Council now come under the 20mph limit – with exceptions including TfL red routes and those in the Royal Parks.

The council says the 20mph limit is part of its ongoing commitment to reducing the severity of collisions, limiting speeds, and tackling road traffic pollution.

Cllr Andrew Smith, cabinet member for highways and environment: “Our teams have been working throughout the summer to carefully and effectively complete this rollout across Westminster.

“Reducing our city-wide speed limit is a clear step forward in our efforts to create a hub of safe and sustainable transport, not only saving lives but creating a calmer and more inviting street environment for those who travel around our city, whether by foot, cycle, car, taxi or bus.”
