Safe vehicles save lives

Brake, the road safety charity, is shining a spotlight on vehicle safety as its main theme for Road Safety Week 2025.

The week, which runs from November 16–22, is one of the UK’s most important road safety campaigns, raising awareness of the impact of road death and injury.

Beginning on the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, Road Safety Week brings into sharp focus the shocking fact that 1,700 people die on UK roads every year, and a further 30,000 receive serious, life-changing injuries. Each death and injury is an unacceptable tragedy that must be stopped.

Safe Vehicles Save Lives

Safe vehicles is a vital component of the ‘safe systems’ approach to road safety – a shared approach to prevent death and serious injury from road crashes. Brake will be raising awareness of how to make sure all vehicles are roadworthy, including motorbikes, scooters and mopeds.

Here the biking community can play their part by making sure key components on our bikes – brakes, tyres, lights and steering in particular – are in first-rate condition every time we ride and we are as safe as we can be. That’s why last week we had some great advice for riders about their brakes, with other safety blogs coming up on tyres, steering and electrics.

To highlight the campaign’s theme, Brake will be sharing real stories behind road crashes, and highlighting how poor maintenance and failures to apply common-sense safety measures lead to crashes, deaths and injuries.

Ross Moorlock, Brake’s chief executive, commented:

“This year’s theme is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about evidence-based systems that are proven to reduce road death and injury and explore how together we can make real change. I encourage everyone to support this important campaign.”
