MAG Launches Expanded “Welcoming Roads” Framework

Four years ago, MAG launched the initial Welcoming Roads manifesto hoping to provoke serious debate about evidence-based road safety policy.

The response? Near silence, as Vision Zero's ideological approach dominated the conversation. So we've gone back to the drawing board - not to give up, but to build something far more comprehensive. The result is a detailed policy framework that tackles everything from driver training and infrastructure design to policing approaches and speed limit setting, all grounded in systematic evidence rather than hierarchy-based ideology.

Yes, MAG's analysis shows motorcyclists suffer disproportionate casualties (19% of deaths from less than 1% of traffic), but the "failed to look properly" factor that kills us affects pedestrians, cyclists and car occupants too. Our proposals apply consistent evidence-based approaches across ALL road users - because that's what the data demands and what actually works.

But here's the crucial bit: we need YOUR input. We believe we're making sense, drawing on the UK's successful 2000-2010 approach that delivered 46% casualty reduction through education and engagement rather than restrictions. But better policy comes from rigorous debate and constructive challenge.

Read the papers, spot the flaws, suggest improvements, tell us where we're wrong - that's how we develop solutions that genuinely work for everyone on Britain's roads.
