Stress of running late

In our last blog we looked at ways to avoid riding while we're stressed.

This time, we're going to look at what happens to us when we are doing something that's going to be inevitable at some point: running late.

Roadworks, congestion, bad weather, an impossible itinerary... each one of these will mean that at some point, we'll set off in good time but pretty soon realise we're never going to make it in time.

The thought of being late is likely to make us stressed. It's not our fault but what will people say, will they be annoyed? Will I get into trouble? The temptation is to try to push it; open up the throttle, ignore the speed signs and gamble on turns and traffic lights to make up that precious time...

Don't; it's just not worth it. Each one of these could lead to a riding fine and ban, or far worse, a crash that could change – or end – your life.

If you're riding late, take a breath and accept it. Find a safe place to stop and call ahead; most people are okay with someone being delayed – let's face it, it will have happened to them too, at some point – as long as they know in advance so they can make plans.

If we get lost, never be tempted to map read or readjust the sat nav on the go. Again, find a safe place to stop, readjust the directions and set off again. The short break will do us good and help calm the nerves.

If the boss has given us a list of deliveries that can't be done, don't take risks to satisfy his bad scheduling. Stick to the speed limit and do what you can but have a word about it later, pointing out the pinch points and slow spots so any future scheduling is possible, not improbable.
