Don’t ride tired this weekend

The Easter holiday weekend is with us, the perfect opportunity to get the moped, scooter or motorcycle out and hit the roads.

But let’s not push it. The dream of a long and relaxing ride might seem like heaven but it comes with a few challenges to trip us up.

If we’re used to 30-minute commutes around town, a long ride out to the coast or the countryside this weekend might mean we’re in the saddle for two to three times as long – and that’s just one way.

Have we ever ridden for that long before? A long ride out means a long ride home when we’re tired at the end of the day – and that’s asking for trouble. Tired riders’ reflexes are dulled, we’re not as attuned to other road users and we’re more likely to take risks on the ride home.

Before we plan a ride this weekend, we need to think about how long we want to be in the saddle for. Plan in possible hold-ups and congestion. Don’t be tempted to ride tired.

Oh, and if you are having a fun ride out, don’t think you can top if off with a drink – even ‘just’ one. Booze and riding don’t mix; alcohol increases risk-taking behaviour, harms those reflexes and leaves us more vulnerable. Stick to soft drinks.
