Fit for the Road? Get Ready to Ride Again!

We know how it is. Winter in London? Not exactly prime riding weather. But now the clocks have gone forward, the days are getting longer, and the itch to get back on two wheels is real. So before you rev up and hit the streets, let’s make sure you—and your bike—are truly road-ready.

  1. Your Bike & the Law: No Excuses

If your bike’s been hibernating, now’s the time to check it’s still legal. Tax, insurance, and MoT—are they all up to date? If not, sort them before you roll out. Police can (and will) seize bikes that aren’t properly registered, and no one wants to start spring with that drama.

  1. Check Your CBT—It’s Not Forever!

Riding on L-plates with a CBT? Remember, that little certificate only lasts two years. It’s super easy to forget, but once it’s expired, you can’t legally ride. Check the date—if it’s due, book your renewal now before you get caught out.

  1. Are You Fit to Ride?

Biking isn’t just about twisting the throttle—it demands fitness, focus, and fast reactions. After a winter break, ask yourself:

  • Are your reflexes sharp?
  • How’s your balance and core strength?
  • When was your last eye test? (Spotting hazards early is everything.)

If you’re feeling a bit sluggish, hit the gym, stretch, or even just go for a run to wake up those riding muscles.

  1. Free 1-2-1 Training? Yes, Please!

Feeling a little rusty? No shame in that. The good news: Transport for London offers FREE 1-2-1 rider training. This is perfect for brushing up on skills, getting more street-smart, and making sure you’re as safe as possible. And did we mention it’s free? Book your session here.

  1. Ease Back In—No Need to Show Off

Look, we get it—you’ve missed the thrill. But rushing back onto busy roads, or pushing your limits too soon? Bad move.

  • Keep your first ride short & sweet—stick to quieter roads and good weather.
  • Take it slow—rebuild your confidence before tackling long rides or tricky routes.
  • Respect the road—remember, biking is awesome, but the margins for error are tiny.
  1. Anything New? Check Yourself!

Life moves fast—has anything changed since your last ride?

  • New meds that could make you drowsy?
  • Vision getting a bit dodgy?
  • Feeling a bit out of sync with the road?

Don’t assume everything is the same as last year—double-check before you get back in the saddle.
